Volunteer Roles

Here is a brief description of the volunteering roles that you could sign up for within the LACOVID Network. As a volunteer you can sign up for as many or as few roles as you like.

Street Volunteers

Our street volunteers carry out general errands for residents living nearby. These might include:
Picking up shopping that the resident has already paid for from local shops such as the post office or Gatcombe Farm.
Picking up small local purchases that haven’t already been paid for, such as a loaf of bread, some milk or some stamps. We ask you to keep to a limit of £5 on any cash purchases and never to take a resident’s ATM card or contactless payment card.
Posting letters.
Volunteers can have a friendly chat at the doorstep (from a suitable distance!) but should never go into a resident’s home.

General Volunteers

Our general volunteers are not linked to particular streets in the village and help out on ad-hoc tasks such as delivering leaflets to our residents or identity passes to our volunteers. General volunteers may also be asked to help out if we can’t get hold of a street volunteer to support an errand requested by a particular resident.

Wellbeing Volunteers

Our wellbeing volunteers work from home and provide general wellbeing support to our residents via phone calls. These volunteers are required to have DBS enhanced clearance and most have some relevant experience on which to draw, such as counselling, mental health or experience with older people. However, the team is acting in a voluntary capacity, not a professional one, and also helps to signpost residents to other agencies and groups if needed. The team also offers a weekly group session called a ‘Sharing Circle’, and runs a Wellbeing group on the LACOVID Facebook page, so they are always looking for new opportunities for sharing ideas about wellbeing.

Tech Support Volunteers

The tech support team provide support to management and admin teams. They support the 3CX phone system, HubSpot CRM, Google G-Suite / Microsoft Teams and Slack. No one is expected to have knowledge of all of these systems as training can be provided, but intermediate to advanced technical literacy is preferred.

Shopping Volunteers

Our shopping volunteers carry out shopping trips to Waitrose in Nailsea, working on a rota basis. The process is entirely cashless and we can pay travel expenses if needed. The shopping volunteers deliver to all addresses in Long Ashton. More information about the grocery shopping service is provided here

Pharmacy Volunteers

Our pharmacy volunteers support our local pharmacy Cohens with deliveries to residents unable to leave their homes. They operate on a rota basis.

Animal Team Volunteers

Our animal team volunteers support local pet owners who can’t leave their homes. Most of the service we provide is dog-walking, but we also try to help if we can if the resident’s pet needs taking to the vet.

Admin Volunteers

Our admin volunteers also work from home and carry out general admin support to the network, including answering the phone and emails, so normally being the first point of contact when a resident needs our help. Admin volunteers need access to a PC, a phone and internet access but we provide all of the software tools. If you have a background in bookkeeping or accountancy, there are opportunities to support our finance team too.
